West Virginia has announced the first round of licensees and locations for medical dispensaries. Back in 2017, the state passed a Senate bill approving medical marijuana, taking 4 years to issue the first round of licenses then.
West Virginia Gets Started
Most of the locations are within Ohio Valley. The state’s Office of Medical Cannabis also announced that the West Virginia Department of Resources accepts applications for medical cannabis beginning at noon on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021.
This is the beginning of cannabis culture getting started in West Virginia. Residents with serious medical conditions can register to receive medical cannabis at www.medcanwv.org. Registration does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
Once approved, the patient will receive a medical cannabis card that is only valid in West Virginia.
Additionally, the West Virginia medical cannabis card offers no legal protections for products obtained outside the state.

“Even during this pandemic, the Office of Medical Cannabis has been working hard to advance the program and to achieve these steps to ensure that medical cannabis is made available to West Virginia residents with serious medical conditions,” said Jason Frame, director of West Virginia Office of Medical Cannabis.
Finally, those who receive a medical cannabis card will have the opportunity to procure medical cannabis for certified medical use in the following forms: Pill; oil; topical forms including gels, creams, or ointments; a form medically appropriate for administration by vaporization or nebulization, dry leaf or plant form; tincture; liquid; or dermal patch.
“People have wondered why it has taken so long and why it is happening. And the answer is because it’s still illegal per federal law. So a state has to find a lot of workarounds and a lot of ways to circumvent federal law when it comes to marijuana,” West Virginia Senator Ryan Weld said.
